En route, stop at the Dambulla Rock Cave Temple, a historic and sacred site which was also a focal point for many kings since the first century B.C.
Dambulla Royal Cave Temple – This site is home to distinctive paintings which can be found in five magnificently constructed cave temples beside the Golden Temple of Dambulla. Observe how these exquisite cave paintings are drawn along the walls along with over 150 statues of Lord Buddha. While you explore this sanctuary make sure to take in the massive gold Buddha statue as well.

Polonnaruwa – contains the UNESCO-listed ruins of what was the medieval capital of Ceylon. It was initially a temporary royal residence. However in the late 10th century, it became a capital city of Ceylon (the former name of Sri Lanka) after the ancient capital of Anuradhapura was conquered and destroyed by King Chola Rajaraja I. The Chola dynasty favoured Polonnaruwa over Anuradhapura as it was thought to be easier to defend.

Peradeniya Royal botanical garden – It was established in 1821, six years after the final occupation of the Kandyan Kingdom by the English.
